How to request a refund on your loan account

Overview

If you believe you were charged incorrectly or made a payment by mistake, you may be able to request a refund. Upstart reviews refund requests on a case-by-case basis, including requests for:

✔ Payment Refunds – If you accidentally made a duplicate or incorrect loan payment.
✔ Fee Refunds – If you were charged a fee that you believe was applied incorrectly.
✔ Origination Fee Inquiries – Some borrowers ask if their origination fee can be refunded. While many of our lending partners no longer charge origination fees, refund eligibility depends on specific lender policies.
✔ Overpayment Refunds – If you paid more than your loan balance when paying off your loan.

Do I Need to Contact Customer Support?

1. Overpayment Refunds Are Processed Automatically

✔ If you overpay your loan balance, any extra amount will be automatically refunded 30 calendar days after your final loan payment is completed.
✔ No action is required to receive this refund.

2. Other Refund Requests Require a Review

For payment or fee-related refunds, you will need to contact customer support so your request can be reviewed.

💡 Finance Charge or Origination Fee Refunds: While origination fee refunds are uncommon, if you believe you may be eligible, you can contact customer support to check your lender’s policy.

How to Request a Refund

If you need to submit a refund request, follow these steps:

  1. Check Your My Account Dashboard – Review your recent payments and transactions to confirm the charge.
  2. Contact Upstart Customer Support – Visit the Contact Us section in your My Account dashboard to find the correct support information.
  3. Provide Payment or Fee Details – Be ready to share relevant details, such as the date, amount, and reason for the refund request.
  4. Await Confirmation – Upstart will review your request and inform you if it has been approved or if additional steps are needed.

How Long Does It Take?

✔ Overpayment refunds are processed 30 days after final payment.
✔ Other refund requests are typically reviewed within 10 business days.
✔ You will receive a confirmation email once your refund has been processed.

What If My Refund Request Is Not Approved?

Not all refund requests can be approved, as refunds are reviewed based on policy guidelines. If your request is not eligible, your loan account remains secure, and all payments will continue to be applied according to your loan terms.
